Home Hosting.

So me and my friends have at many different points tried to make a Big Dig server. We accomplished that but when we go to try and connect to the server it doesn't show as online in the multiplayer tab but my friend swears on his life (and I swear on my own eye sight) that the server was on and running fine but just wasn't appearing as online (red 'X' instead of green bars) in the menu itself. We tried for hours to figure this out I've gone through every forum and read everything even remotely related to this issue but still nothing. If anyone has had this issue in the past and has managed to fix it we could really use the help cause we have hit a brick wall at this point.
