Technic Launcher not downloading properly

Hello. So my problem is probably not asked much, which is why I couldn't find any answers to this so far. What is happening is when I download the Technic Launcher, it downloads as a zip file. Then when I try to open the zip file, it just creates a new folder called "Technic Launcher." I have tried deleting and re-installing everything, but that hasn't worked. I never even get to the step of actually having the launcher icon on my desktop.

You need to get it to open with Java. Try right-clicking, and choose to open it with Java

I tried installing java again but it isn't doing anything different. When I type "java -version" in Terminal it says I have Java installed though. Am I doing something wrong?
