Mystcraft basics. Link Books. Basic teleporter.

Hi guys.

Finally have some time for a short tutorial for the newbies.

Have you wanted to travel really quick to your oil field desert?

Maybe you've been in a sticky situation underground and needed a quick getaway?

You are sick of the pigment coming out of your portal?

Never fear, Mystcraft Link Books are here.

You can get away fast to your base, return from the Nether or setup a teleporting outpost somewhere in the quarry site and the other in your home.

Here's a quick tutorial for the Link Books with Mystcraft.

I will not discuss the basics of NEI here. You will need to find some recipes yourself.

---------------------------

Chapter One: Standard Link Book (teleport from other dimensions).

1. You will need an ink mixer, oh here's one (the wood planks colour is not important):

vK6MkbJ.jpg

2. We need to place it somewhere...

4FeJANF.jpg

3. How about right clicking it...

1fKeIDz.jpg

Yes, you will need an ink vial and some paper, go get it, kill some squids and grow some sugar cane / put some wood in the pulverizer, craft some ink vials.

4. Put the ink vial and paper in the left slots or shift click to auto fit them.

ZsF2els.jpg

(Oh, it turned black and you've got an empty vial and something in the right side.)

5. In the bottom right slot is the linking panel. Get it from there.

facdqhw.jpg

(What do you do with it?)

6. You can craft a Link Book. You need some leather and a crafting table.

lw8NSIR.jpg

(A grey book... Pffff...)

7. It is unlinked. You need to link it first do a destination (to a spot). Grab it and put it in your hand.

yvEHd8B.jpg

8.  Right click with it in the air (use it). You will see:

SwfkPuy.jpg

(What the hell is this...?)

This is the the target for this book. Overworld (the target dimension) because you've linked it here to this very spot where are you standing now (target coordinates).

9. Press E or Esc to exit...

adPBFlf.jpg

Yeah. It's green now (it is linked).

Can you test it? No.

This is a standard Link Book with teleporting capabilities to a different dimension.

This won't teleport you from overworld to overworld. Only from other dimensions to get back.

Yes, you can test it in the Nether.

10. Go to a different dimension.

wXTrdYq.jpg

11. Right click with it in your hand.

Z0guY89.jpg

12. Click the blue-ish area on the right side. Yes, it looks better now. In the overworld it was greyed out or something.

DY7EYEt.jpg

(What in heavens is this...? What's that sound...?)

RqgGjOV.jpg

And you are in the spot again. Just fine and everything. But wait....

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

(Where's the book?!? It's gone. Where is it?)

Right where you left it.

Mystcraft teleports you, not the book.

You've got teleported. The book didn't. It never does. It's there where you left it.

BhcHZ0r.jpg

(Wait a minute... It has health - hearts?)

Mystcraft book when left on the ground (it's an entity) has its health and can be 'killed'.

Beware when leaving a book down it can get damaged and go.. puff.

To pick it up right click on it on the ground (don't kick it to the lava) and drag it from the left side of the book GUI to your inventory (when grabbed the books GUI will close and show inventory).

56wBJMC.jpg

If you want to avoid the book dropping craft a Bookstand....

L152rNG.jpg

....and put it down in the source location...

Nrdjn7i.jpg

...then put the book on it (right click)

WHzeLND.jpg

And there you go. You made it to the end of chapter one.

Now you have a working one way teleporter from other dimensions. You can setup a reverse path to it. Link the book in the Nether and carry it home and place on a Bookstand (no more pigmen).

This one can be stationary (Bookstand) or portable when in other dimensions (carry the book by your side) but it will be dropped when you use it without a Bookstand.

Warning: Linking books are very fragile, even on a Bookstand. One direct hit of a Ghast fireball and you can be stranded here for ever.

TL;DR

1. Craft ink mixer

2. Fill with ink and paper

3. Craft Link Panel

4. Craft Link Book with leather

5. Link it (right click), goes green

6. Go to other dimension

7. Use book

8. Magic. Teleported me home.

9. Where's the book?

10. I'll put it on a Bookstand next time.

---------------------------

Chapter Two: Link Book with intra-linking (teleport from anywhere).

This one tells you how to get an Intra linking effect on the book.

1. Do everything from chapter one from points 1 to 4. Get some pulverized gold (or some ender pearls). One stack should be enough if you're lucky (gold - 64, pearls - 16). I used gold.

This will bring you to

6Lb3LDF.jpg

2. Throw some pulverized gold to the dark circle (to the ink)

1IXOBJ8.jpg

Now the circle starts to change colours.

Seen green. This is an additional positive effect on the produced linking panel.

j1oztrI.jpg

Seen red. This is an negative effect.

HQgR4Vb.jpg

The duration of the colours is the chance you will get an effect. It all is about chances.

I've been lucky today. I've got my resulting panel the second time (with the effect I wanted).

3. Pull it out of the right bottom slot and hover over it.

cWs60e3.jpg

You want Intra Linking. Trust me. Don't wish anything more.

If you stumble upon the Disarm effect be very careful as it will strip you from your inventory when teleporting with a book made of that panel.

I'm not responsible for playing with the negative effects in books. I, personally, had my Disarm panel thrown in the trash.

The complete list with the effects for the curious is here.

4. Go and do everything from points 6 to 9 from chapter one.

Now you have a linked book with Intra Linking effect that can teleport you from anywhere (any dimension) to anywhere (any dimension) and you can teleport inside one dimension from one spot to another (and back with a second Intra Linking Link Book).

5. Go do something with this new knowledge.

Warning: Linking books are very fragile, even on a Bookstand. One direct hit of a Ghast fireball and you can be stranded here for ever.

If you link a book to a spot and then build a mountain in this area.... I don't know what will happen. Test it yourself...in creative obviously.

You're at the end of chapter two. You've made it.

TL;DR

1. Craft ink mixer

2. Fill with ink and paper

3. Add some gold

4. Craft Link Panel with Intra Linking

5. Craft Link Book with leather

6. Link it (right click), goes green

7. Go to wherever you go

8. Use book

9. Magic. Teleported me home.

10. Where's the book?

11. I left it on a book stand this time.

--------------------------------------

Have fun. Don't kill yourself :)

If you see anything wrong in my starters guide or have some additional info leave me a PM or post it here.

It's such a shame that the 'follow' ability was removed (well except by command). I suppose it was rather OP but that could have been fixed by using expensive materials for the ink.

Will you be doing a chapter for portals as well later on? You can do some amazing stuff with those things :P

I've barely touched Mystcraft. Done some magic gold ore ages and poured a sea of quarries over it and that's it. I engage you to do a tutorial (or two). That one was painful, the clicking over the imgur and the text editor, browsers tabs, graphic editor was vary exhausting (I'm a father of a 4 year old energy volcano travelling at transwarp speed over my house - I need sleep). I'm going to do some tutorial but surely not this week.

I find dimensional doors to be much more practical as a from of teleportation tbh, as they can be used with a pressure plate to avoid all the annoying clicking around link books cause, or to create the illusion of a house which is bigger inside than outside. :)

Although I have to agree that mystcraft is a lot cheaper, as world thread can be hard to get.

Dimensional Doors is also notorius as the number one cause for corrupted worlds and game crashes, while I cannot even remember the last ticket about Mystcraft. DDoors may have some appeal, but it very urgently needs to become more stable and safe.

Thanks for the effort, bochen. But do tend to that little volcano of yours (you sure it's not secretly an Enderman, teleporting around?), and make sure it doesn't unlink stuff in real life that you'll miss.  ;-)

Actually you can craft portal frames with Mystcraft that you can place a book into and use. You can make them virtually any size too and their forum has some amazing pics if you care to look them up.

I'm with Curunir on this one as I lost an entire quarry world to DDoors a while back as I thought I would be clever and use them to move between floors in a quarry base I was making. It totally ruined the dimension (super intense frame lag) and I had to scrap it. Mystcraft is a superior way to teleport around, no question.

DDoors is good for two things in my opinion however. If you want a smallish space to build something in the pocket dimensions are pretty nice. If you're willing to brave the traps and Limbo exploring the dimensional dungeons can be fun too as the creator did some amazing stuff with some of those.

Yeah. DDoors is in chaos right now. Got some world thread and crafted a rift remover to get it out of my sight.

That volcano surely behaves like an Enderman teleporting. And the stolen goods.. It all fits now. You're a genius.
