This seems pretty neat and I'm sure the paywall is intended to help you recoup the costs of developing and maintaining this.
That said, the paywall isn't kosher according to the EULA. Otherwise this seems neat, and very useful for server admins. I'm sure that if you removed the paywall and just asked for donations, then you'd be able to build a good userbase very quickly while avoiding most legal issues that could arise from directly contradicting the EULA.
E: Also, having a paywall - even one as cheap as $8 - gives a slight impression of being shady, if you ask me.

If you've been using Linux for any amount of time, you should know how to do all of this, thus making guides for such a thing unnecessary... Probably why you've had trouble finding one.

Why would you recommend users to install Java 7 instead of Java 8? Java 8 works fine for all modpacks and is the standard towards which Mojang is pushing folks.

disconsented reacted to Valkon in I have a couple of questions that can't be answered easily... Why do people not use ProjectE in their modpacks, and why has no one tried to produce a better alternative to FTB: Monster!?!?
    That's... quite debatable.
Personally, I preferred EE1's original system of all transmutations being done via different patterns of items in a crafting table with the philosopher's stone (and at the time it could even be automated reasonably well with the addition of Buildcraft's autocrafting tables, and it would require quite a bit more effort and thinking to set up an automatic transmutation system with it compared to something like EE2's condenser where you just shove everything into one block), but maybe that's just me.

Thank you so much!  Your the man Plowmanplow!  That's has got it fixed.   Found the offending file you mentioned and corrected it.  You've saved me days of further frustration.

And thanks again Disconsented, your program works a treat.

disconsented reacted to plowmanplow in Donations vs Item Rewards
Donation Plugins: I don't use them and would never play on a server which pretends to accept "Donations" when they are really executing a "cash for goods" economic transaction. Look up donation in any dictionary and the general idea is "an act or instance of presenting something as a gift, grant, or contribution".
Donation Rewards: If you want to reward players with some token for donation (i.e. the cosmetic mechanics you mentioned) I would have no problem with that as it keeps everyone on a level playing field. Providing a material advantage (items, abilities, etc.) for pay (real world currency) is NOT a donation. It is a financial transaction. This splits a community into two groups: Those who can't or won't pay for an advantage, and those who can/do/will.
Personal Thoughts: (since you asked) Expecting, or even ASKING for that matter, other people to pay for your hobby is pretty lame. If you are hosting a server because you enjoy it or think it's cool, go for it. You can have a lot of fun and provide an interesting play-space for other people as well. However, like any other hobby you can think of, this will cost money. Even if it's home-hosted someone had to buy the hardware and electricity ain't free. If you are into boating, would you walk up to random people in a marina and ask them to help you buy a boat if you promise to let them ride on it? You would get laughed out of the place. If you are hosting a server as a commercial, for-profit endeavor you are also welcome to do that. However, Mojang has expressly stated that the "pay to win" and "non-cosmetic" rewards for cash is something they 100% do not want. If you can stay within those restrictions and make a great server/community, then by all means go for it, but don't pretend that you are accepting "donations". Doing so is dishonest and harms the greater MC community.

I know this thread is kinda silent, but I just wanted to say awesome job with it. This fits perfectly into an SMP Modpack I am working on and I think is quite unique in a sense that I really haven't seen anything like it.

I've had good experiences with Akliz, but I hear it's a bit pricey for what you get. Amazon's AWS has a free tier, but I doubt it's all that great as a server host.

To be honest, you should do your own research here - I have almost no experience with Minecraft server hosting.

You might have better luck with your requests on somewhere busier like the Minecraft Forums - I don't think there are many modders on these forums apart from me, and even just this would be beyond anything I've ever done before.

Alternatively, you could try suggesting this directly to MFR's developers, since as far as I know only MFR adds sewage.

I don't know how to revert, but The new launcher employs a "url" sniffer, so when an API link is copied while it's open it will auto-add the mod packs.

Cauldron was a combination of Forge, Bukkit, Spigot, Custom code, and maybe something else. Spigot (then or now) does not address modded MC.

Then those guys were being super awesome helpful, but in general you want to take crashes for a specific launcher('s modpack) to their forums.
Those modpack creators, whose responsibility it is to offer support for their packs, can then help you best.

And just for anyone else who's reading this: the reason why we have this policy is that there are a lot of people in the Minecraft community who are making money off minecraft or trying to. We're one of them, but there are tons. There are hundreds or thousands of streamers or aspiring streamers, hundreds or thousands of websites. If we allowed anyone who wanted to to come onto these forums and post an ad to their content, there wouldn't be anything else here. If you want to post some content, you're welcome to do so. But content that just happens to link repeatedly to your monetized website is native advertising and we're not going to put up with it. If the advertising is accidental, remove the links and continue posting. If you're not willing to do that, then stop posting or I will make you.

disconsented reacted to Zlepper in Modpack Helper | Pack modpacks | Check permissions | Upload to web | Update Solder Automatically
    A little background story first:
I have been hosting packs and servers for the last few years. A few years ago Technic added support for allowing us to host custom modpacks. This was  awesome and I went ahead almost the moment it happened. This was still the time of big and heavy zip files.
Then came along Solder. Solder helped us destributing files one at a time.
It took me almost a year to get it working from when I started attempting to use it. I did however get it working, back in June I think it was.
All was well, though I quite quickly discovered that packing files for Solder was quite the hasle.
So being the enormous lazy guy I am I sat down one Tuesday and made a script that could pack all the files for me.
Nice i thought, the only problem was that I had to enter modname, modversion and minecraft version for each and every mod... And having a 150 files modpack that certainly wasn't boring
So I had what the h**k and turned it into an actual program, that could figure out most of the important stuff like name, version and mcversion.
Since then I added quite a few extra things I thought was necesarry, like only packing updated mods, checking permissions, including forge and configs.
    So enough with the story:

    Solder Helper
The result of all this is something I thought others could make use of, so that's why I decided to share it with you guys here, since i'm likely not the only one who has been pretty bored with updating.

    Core features:
Create packs for either Solder or just normal zip packs. Create FTB Packs and get permission lists Include any forge version you wishes, just choose from the application. Include configs Check permissions if you wishes so (Highly encouraged) Both private and public. Get permission list in a nice text format Get a list nice and simple list of all packed mods Runs on both Linux and Windows Get modlist Include unarchieved mods Include stuff like the script folder from Minetweaker Automatically upload Solder Files to an FTP host Automatically update your modpacks on your solder install Automatically upload Solder Files to Amazon S3 services With all the improvement it's shouldn't take more than a minute to pack all your files for distribution.
The program is OpenSource and can be found on github.

For Windows the installer can be found here. This installer also included an autoupdater for when I add additional features.
This uses about 10 MB of space total.

For Linux just do the following and you can find the program in your home directory:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zlepper/TechnicSolderHelper/master/TechnicSolderHelper/install.sh | bash It can be done from from anywhere, though you have to use the terminal, then the installer script takes care of the rest.
WARNING: It will use quite a lot extra space, since it requires mono to be installed, about 250 MB. However the installation of mono is included in the script.
To run the program just navigate into the install directory and look for the file called "Run SolderHelper.sh"
To update it just run the "update.sh" file.

    Planned features:
Support for FTB packs Added Support for AT Launcher packs Autoupload to FTP servers Added Autoupdate of the actual Technic Solder installs, so you don't have to enter versions each time. Added Creation of a modlist you can paste in places like Technic ads Added Creation of a complete permissionlist. Added (Would be nice if we could format things in the pack configs, but that's for another time) Bugs
I expect a few bugs here and there. If you happen to stumble into any the program will create a crash report on your desktop. If you could report the issue on github and include the crashlog, and what you were doing I would be very grateful, and will try to fix issues ASAP.
There shouldn't be any dangerous bugs, but incase anything goes wrong I'm not responsible for it.
    Warning:
If you decide to use the mysql function of the program, be warned: You have to open a port to your MySQL server, which is a major security risk.
It is recommended you create an ssh tunnel to connect to the remote server:
ssh -L 3306:hostname:3306 [email protected] The syntax is
ssh -L <localport>:hostname:<remoteport> <username>@<servername> The you can point Modpack Helper to localhost and everything should work securely.
