freakachu got a reaction from CharZinta in Why Mojang info?
to address your main point: because we are not allowed to distribute the game proper, only the mods. mojang provides an API for authenticating accounts that is used by the launcher in order to make sure you've bought the game and then download the minecraft files from mojang's servers directly. we are not the only launcher that does this, either. FTB, magiclauncher (that you mentioned), ATlauncher, as well as others all work the same way. it's no less safe than using the official mojang launcher, because it uses the same API to authenticate. we don't keep that info (other than on your pc in order to enable the "remember me" option, which is implemented the exact same way mojang's is). it's not sent to our site or anything like that. if you want proof, the launcher is an open source project on github. you can look it up and peruse the code yourself if you feel so inclined. there's no subterfuge here.

additionally, you seem to be confused about modding "platforms". there are really only 2 major mod platforms. bukkit, which is strictly server side mods and forge, which is more expansive in its power and not limited to servers only. technic packs all use forge (this is the "FML" you mention. FML is Forge Mod Loader, the part of forge that initializes the mods). pretty much every pack on the technic platform are also based on forge. there isn't a 3rd branch being created here, we're just making it easy to install and use forge mods.

there will never be an option to run our packs without logging in unless there's an extreme shift in copyright laws or mojang policies/licenses. if the launcher didn't require that of you, we would be unable to do a 1 click install and you could not play on any servers that aren't in offline mode using our launcher. if this is a deal breaker for you, then your son is simply not going to be playing the crafting dead anytime soon unless you manually recreate the pack yourself, sorry.

lastly, don't sign your posts, it's in the global rules.

whyyes, it is in the rules. this is why I have helpfully linked the rules in my sig. here, I'll even prove it to you in your favorite manner, with an image:

I also see that you did not take the warning to heart. you also seem to think you are supposed to backseat moderate, which you aren't. do you see the little "staff" logo under my name? or the "admin" logos under sct, genpage, canvox, etc? that means you get to tell people whattodoandmeanit. you aren't the hero this forum needs, nor the one it deserves.

gonna lock this up since it's resolved.  in the future, use the issue tracker for technical support.  it's far nicer and more useful for this sort of thing

the only conceivable reason for choosing XP over a more recent OS like 7, or even 8 for that matter, that I can come up with would be for use as a honeypot machine to attract malware and other nasties on purpose.  from a technical standpoint, 7 is literally better in every measurable way.  under the hood, 7 is faster and more efficient than XP.  that was one of the main selling points of the OS when it launched.  I did some digging around to find some xp vs 7 comparisons and as far as I can tell, 7 is only worse when it comes to startup times overall.  even then, it is merely slightly slower to start and still far better than vista (as it should be).

regardless of all that though, by recommending XP you are putting anyone who takes your advice at risk of severe system compromise.  any current and future remote code execution bugs discovered in the OS will not be patched, software that runs on it is no longer updated or supported by vendors.  in a world where almost any idiot with access to google and some ill intent can get ahold of highly sophisticated cracking and exploit kits that don't really require much knowledge to use, an XP machine is a red carpet invitation.  if these were to be machines isolated from the internet that a person might use because they just like the look&feel or whatever of XP that'd be one thing, but that isn't the case here.  under no circumstances should anyone use an XP machine as a server for anything on the internet if they can avoid it.

for the guy saying XP is great, XP is now 100% swiss cheese in terms of security.  it's no longer supported by MS in terms of updates, and is eclipsed in basically every way by 7.  if you want low resource usage, I hear OS/2 is AMAZING!

why stop there though? MS-DOS is pretty sweet, but you might have a hard time getting java to run.  might have to use EMM.

I've been that "mature" kid in the past.  here's a secret though: I wasn't really very mature.  I was playing grown up, which is kind of like being mature but without all the life experience to back it up.  were I to run a PUBLIC server (which I don't and won't for many reasons), I would certainly institute an age floor.  you can complain that it's "unfair" if you want.   you can wax poetic about how someone has to teach these impressionable young skulls full of mush how to behave, but the problem is that I shouldn't have to be that guy.  you want to know who's supposed to teach them how to behave?  their parents.  if I wanted to be some kid's father figure, I'd go make an actual kid of my own instead and be a real father.  I don't run minecraft servers to play step-dad to random 13 year olds on the internet or whatever.

trying to take every wayward youth that comes along under your wing takes time.  a LOT of time.  time I don't have.

the truth is that it's not a perfect world out there filled with perfect people.  age restrictions aren't around because anyone over the age of X is "mature", they're around because people over the age of X are less likely to be a raging moron than people under the age of X.  want proof of that?  think about how you acted 5 years ago.  think about what you thought/believed/knew 5 years ago.  you were stupid as fuck 5 years ago, weren't you?  there you go.

    TL;DR:
    it's risk management.
server OPs are not surrogate parents.

we've actually implemented a little countermeasures for this recently.  as far as our official packs go, the mirrors hosting them will not work without a valid MC login token now.  when it comes to platform packs, there's really little that we can do for the reasons neowulf already stated.

so we do what we can, where we can but it's not a battle that will ever be won and we know this.
