I think i'm using 0.5.7 how do i update it to 0.5.9? EDIT: Also if i update it will i have to start a new world?

I've tried using both Optifine HD D5 Ultra, and Optifine HD D5 Standard, but it glitches out with my world really bad. Water doesn't move, trees don't disappear when you chop them. Seems like the blocks don't update. Is this a common problem, and is there a solution?
