Yes, this works on earlier versions, but on 1.1.3 to make compressed coal you cannot smelt it, you have to use an enrichment chamber.

To make compressed coal, you need an enrichment chamber. To make an enrichment chamber, you need steel. To make steel, you need compressed coal (unless you've spent some time in the nether). I see a problem with this. Could someone maybe point me in the right direction.
