My friend can't join my Hexxit server.

how do you set up port forwarding? hes not on the same lan and how do you check if its local? -
I made a Hexxit server the other day, and it lets me join fine but when my friend tries to join, it says the server does not exist or something. I don't know how to let him join. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
