Laurncher crashes at Mojang screen upon loading any modpack

I'm having the exact same problem--seems to be with the launcher, since any modpack produces the same result. I've also tried updating Java and re-installing the launcher. Like the OP, I've got a 32 bit operating system, so I can't turn it up to 2 or 3 GB. 1 is the max for 32-bit.
