Unable to load Tekkit 1.1.8 (vanilla works)

I got the exact same problem (same OS, Java Version, Tekkit Version, freezing at world creation/loading) and solved it. I went into the options of Technic Launcher and increased the Memory to 2GB and checked "Increase PermGen Size". That worked for me.
