*Sigh*. Got it working somehow. Here's what I did: Re-launched the game, it fully updated. Ran it, modloader error'd on WirelessRedPower. Removed offending mod. Tried to connect. Got bad login. Deactivated online-mode in server. Server returned a message saying I'm missing several redpower mods. Removed them from server (will also remove MAtmos, that thing's bloody annoying!!). Server said that I'm missing a specific version of NetherOres. Tried looking. Failed. Removed from server. Works. For now (dum dum duuum!). So I guess it all culminates with the updater working like an old bus going uphill on a hot sunday afternoon (spoiler: It isn't). I believe I can only plead for an OFFLINE installer to come out with all the modpacks bundled and with nothing missing, then it would work as it should. Overall it's a great modpack with wonderful innovations and features that will keep anyone glued to the keyboard and mouse for hours on end. Shame it has to drag you kicking and screaming through all hell just to set it up straight.

Hmm, that might be the problem I'm having. Looking through the logs the launcher gives "not found" errors for some modpacks that apparently should be there, but aren't. I'll try launching and relaunching and see where I can get with this. EDIT: Well, it did download some more stuff after the second launch and then when I ran it ModLoader threw up an error after the Mojang splash and the game crashed. Something with Wireless RedPower was causing damage. Removed from mods. Now I still can't connect to my server, but now it has "Bad login" and "End of Stream" errors instead of "Minecraft Forge" error. I guess that's an improvement...

As noted I am running Java 7u5 on a 32-bit system, running the launcher from the JAR file. I read several posts regarding the problem and no solution offered (if any) solved the issue.
