I also have this problem. Sometimes I open the launcher (which takes 15+ seconds to open) and it says unable to connect to minecraft.net Since there is no refresh or retry button, I have to close and try again. Without fail, the second time I try it seems to work fine. Still very annoying. I've been playing minecraft all day yesterday and today without the launcher and it has worked without any problem. Considering my other issues I am having with this launcher, I would say that the launcher is more likely to blame than the minecraft servers.
