Don't pin this on Java 8 just because it's early access, I can run other apps just fine with it and the error log seems to suggest it's an X Server error rather than an issue with Java anyway. It's probably something to do with the rendering of the 'borderless' window now used by the launcher itself since I'd put my money of the 'Bad picture parameter' being 0 for the border or something.
