If the Mojang servers are down, we would not be able to log into minecraft. Beyond logging in, Mojang should have nothing to do with connecting to a server. Client sends out ping, IP for server is found, ping sent back, connection opened between client and server.

Same here. I am done with messing with anything having to do with tekkit. It just isn't worth my time to figure this out my self but I am 100% certain it is something to do with the server. Probably forge.(Buggy POS thing.)
