Tried changing launcher to beta build and now it wont start

Launcher Version: 253 Operating System: Windows XP Java Version: Version 7 Update 40 Antivirus Program: Description of Problem: I tried joining a server and it said I needed an older version of minecraft. I tried changing the launcher to run beta build only to see if that would fix it. It said it needed a manual restart and closed out. When I tried opening it again it shows a loading bar under the Technic logo and closes out when it finishes. I've tried re-installing, restarting my computer, and installing linux instead of windows.
