If you are d/ling using IE and you have a .zip file you CANNOT extract it like the solution states. Make sure to enable file extensions (if you are on Windows 7 - just google it) and rename the .zip to minecraft_1.2.5.jar and follow the rest of the instructions. This is finally what solved it for me.
