Pictures would be helpful. It's possible your render distance is set too low, but there are a number of other things that could be wrong.

I had this same problem the first time I installed Tekkit.

Need to look inside Tekkit folder for something like Options.txt

Change view radius from 0 to 10.

Cant provide more accurate directions since I'm not home right now.

Edit: max view distance minecraft supports is 15

Negative on this. The option to change Render Distance is in Video Settings in the Options menu inside the game. Changing the server view distance is typically asking for trouble.

Whoa can't believe I missed that option before.

I can see sky again instead of it being pitch black all the time.
