Technic Launcher cannot connect or update, cannot connect to mirror server

Launcher Version: 1.0.1

Operating System: Win 7 64bit

Java Version: Most recent, downloaded a new copy earlier today

Antivirus Program: Kaspersky Internet Security 2012

Description of Problem:

Whenever I tried to run the technic launcher an error window would pop up saying that the updater had failed to run. The launcher then would come up and it would only display the most recent mod used (tekkit), it said the tumblr feed was down and that it couldn't connect to minecraft.net

I tried forcing the launcher to run through java and removing (backed up, of course) the lastlogin, launcher.properties and the launcher.jar, all to no avail. Now a window comes up saying "downloading launcher". The progress bar does not progress and it just cycles through the numbers 0-3/3, eventually saying either that there was an error or that it could not connect to the remote server. I have also tried downloading a new copy of the launcher, but I cannot connect to the mirror server.

I have tried disabling kaspersky and windows firewall all to no effect. The launcher was working smoothly a few days ago, no major changes occurred prior to onset of errors. It seems that the most likely problem is kaspersky, but I have tried disabling everything and it worked fine days ago when everything was the same.

I should also add that I can connect with vanilla minecraft fine

edit - I also am using a university connection. I have been using technic with it for several days without problem, and there have been no announcements of any changes, but I suppose it is possible that it is something on their end, kind of doubt it though
