Null Pointers when checking for updates

Java Version: java 7

Antivirus Program: Avast! it is up to date

Description of Problem:

when I start the launcher it says it is downloading the needed files, then it checks for an update and I get an error message

not sure how to fix this. I keep deleting the folder and reinstalling it, but it doesn't help.
