I have the same issue. Invisible chests, or sometimes they just go a strange messes up texture. The same thing happens with animals . I have to keep clearing my cache to re-fix the issue, and just prey that it wont kick in for a while.... The strange thing is the issue is the same if you are:

- not using a texture pack

-swap texture packs after noticiing the issue.

I had thought using a diff text pack might actually solve the issue but i guess not.

Running oracles version of java (7) from webupd8 team ppa with ubuntu 12.04 LTS (unity)

I think pressing f11 to fullscreen the application can be 'triggering' the issue but cant confirm.

It's almost the same for me, except I can see chests (large chests too), I do however see random textures on the cows' and pigs' legs, but the rest of their bodies are invisible.

I'm running Lubuntu 12.10.

michael@mikenet:~$ java -version

java version "1.7.0_09"

OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.3.4) (7u9-2.3.4-0ubuntu1.12.10.1)

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.2-b09, mixed mode)

EDIT: Just checked and my player skin is also random textures, except torso and face (behind headwear).

EDIT2: I just remembered that I also can't hear sounds from the animals when I hit them, however, I can hear the water, birds etc.
