Question with sorting machine

Hey I just made a sorting machine and it isnt working. Here is whats going on:

1. Item gets sucked out of chest and goes into to the contraption

2. If the item doesn't match what is in the first machine, it goes to the second. If it doesnt match the second, it goes to the third, etc.

3. When the item reaches the machine where it matches, the item doesnt go to the chest and instead stays in the sorter. I know this because the item comes back when i break the sorter.

4. The blinking red light on the sorter stops blinking and stays red.

Any help with this probelm? BTW I am not using buffers.
