Audio mod

I have recently started playing hexxit on a server with my friend and I have been going crazy over the fact that there is no music & sound setting in the game like there is in modern mine craft. The rain and zombies are so loud in this game!  I hate that there is no way to decrease the volume of them individually instead of decreasing the whole game volume. Does anyone know of any mods for 1.5.2 that allows you to lower the volume of hostile mobs and weather specifically?

PS: I've tried lowering the sounds in audacity and replacing the ogg files and when I do this it doesn't play the sound at all. I also do know that there is a "newsound" folder and I have replaced those ogg files as well and it still doesn't play the file.
