Displaying chest contents

I have set up a sorting system using redpower tubes and sorters, and some automatic crafting rigs using retrievers and retrievulators. My warehouse is getting bigger and bigger, close to 100 chests atm and still growing every day. At the moment i'm placing my chests in a 2x4 tower and using computercraft monitors above each tower with the contents each chest.

Is it possible to get the number of items in each chest (or the number of stacks) so I can display this number on the monitors? I did some searching and the only thing I found was to use a regulator to detect if a chest is empty or not...
