how do I Update my Tekkit Lite Server?

I currently have 0.57 and want to update to 0.61. After a couple failed attempts I did eventually get it to work, not sure if its the "right" way though. Anyone have a better understanding than I do of what files/folders are actually being updated and if there are any changes that might have to be made to an existing world?
