How do you manage lag?

Hey tekkiteers,

I'm in a server with some various plugins designed to manage lag. Needless to say after some frustration with the way the lag management is, well, managed, I'm wondering what some people do on their servers to manage lag (do you have certain plugins, have certain items banned, mobs only on certain worlds, etc.).

Well you know, you can ban only the most lag-creating items... but mostly what makes a server fast and lag-free is hardware.... nothing works like magic but hardware.... but hardware costs money....

I wouldn't trust plugins that simply 'manage lag', although banning some items could be effective, as well as drop eaters and world borders.
