Description of Problem:

My CPU goes all the way to 100% and locks up while updating/downloading packs. Any reason why?

This is a known problem with the launcher. You'll just have to wait until it finishes.

IE: The launcher is not yet very efficient at unpacking lots of little files. If you don't have a good computer, it may very well lock everything up until it finishes.

This effect is especially pronounced when downloading hexxit.

The only real thing you can do to help is to not be running other things at the same time the launcher is downloading a pack.
