Tekkit lite - replacement for IC2?

SO...I've read that IC2 is out of the picture (been away from mc a long time). And I was reading about Thermal Expansion. Is it possible to replace IC2 with thermal, without f'ing up something? or do I need to abandon tekkit :/? Can't really enjoy the game fully without some kind of mod like IC2...actually...I don't even know if Thermal will fill that...but it's worth a try.
