How to change item names with Tekkit Classic bukkit?

As you all know tekkit classic is stuck in a little world of 1.2.5 yet all our clever fixes for changing item information sprung up in 1.4.X with NBT and more recently we use meta data. Yet meta data is not avalable in the 1.2.5 api of bukkit 1.2.5-R4.1 So I searched around and found solution that boiled down to this concept: https://forums.bukkit.org/threads/how-to-setname.108563/ this did now work yet it works in later versions of bukkit. So does anybody have a solution for us stuck here in 1.2.5?
