Lag spikes because of shields?

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this is the right forum, but I was wondering if anyone else is getting lag spikes at regular intervals when they have a shield on their hotbar? I am using a diamond shield at the moment, but a stone shield and iron shield both caused the same problems. Once I remove the shield the game runs fine, even if I leave the shield in my inventory. Its just when the shield is on the hotbar. Any ideas? Thanks!

P.S. This happens on Single Player. I haven't yet tried to play on a server.
