Almost always a socket error, but varies in type. Sometimes read times out, others it says that software caused the issue, and others say that a peer closed the connection.
I think it crashes occasionally due to certain items. One time I crafted an automatic crafting table and placed it down and it instantly crashed the server but let me join again almost 30 seconds later.
In addition, I'm not using anything stupid like AVG or Norton, I have Avast and have forwarded all of my ports myself. As well, I also use a server wrapper to run it as a service. It is called YAMS. However, I do not believe the wrapper is the problem because I ran it with 2.1.1 with absolutely no issues.
