Thank you very much. Now I can feel slightly silly rather than frustrated :-)

I setup a typical 3 x 4 obsidian with no corners and use the flint and steel to set a fire in it and get no portal. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just my save? The only extra addon I have is Thaumcraft because I read somewhere it could also be used in this mod pack.
