How to rotate/change the facing of blocks

Me and a friend just started playing Tekkit Classic 3.1.2 and have run into an issue with the rotation of placed block like tree trunks and stairs. It seems there is no way to change the rotation of a block when placing it. All tree trunks face upwards and stairs do not connect. Is this a bug in our installation or do we have use a special hotkey or tool to change the rotation?
