No, In adventure mode you can at least punch stuff too. And I'm pretty sure In creative you can punch as well.

So I'm just playing Big Dig trying to set up some Forestry machines, and BAM. Why can't I break my redstone torch? I try just punching the air and nothing happens, I make a new creative world and try breaking stuff, I could place things just fine and bone meal and stuff I just cant break/dig/punch. Anyone know what's going on?

Well the rifts might not entirely be his fault, I've never used a rift blade and the only time I KNOW I've broken a door/warp is when I was thinking of making a "walk-in closet" and even then I used a rift remover. So unless a creeper exploded a portal, rifts can spawn randomly and eat the world.
