Axe, Pickaxe, Shovel

I can see the item in my hotbar and when i shift scroll it "moves" that seems to suggest it's switching. But I watched a video where it showed the current item just above the hotbar to let you know what you currently have selected. It's that icon above the hotbar that I do not see.

The icon to show which item I have selected doesn't show up. No error/graphic bug, nothing. I tried turning off the custom fonts as others have suggested and it hasn't helped. Any ideas?
