Can you tell me why my control rods are not working too please?

So no matter what I do my fission reactors blow up at 720 degrees. Also my control rod doesn't work when i put it next to the reactor. I looked at a ton of wiki pages and youtube videos to try and figure out why it does this but I never found it. They all also said that it only blows up when it reaches 2000 degrees. Please Help. The version of Tekkit I'm using is 1.2.6b for Minecraft 1.6.4
