What is a DMZ? Sorry if that is a stupid question. my friends are saying it says can't connect: connection time lost and something else that I can't remember.

I have created servers before and have my ip set to static and have successfully port forwarded. However my port forward isn't working on the hexxit server but it is working or at least has worked on previous servers. I can't figure out why my friends are not able to join and this is getting annoying as I wanted to start a YouTube series this summer so please help.
