You will likely need to extract it into the plugins folder (or you can manually extract it to your minecraft.jar found in your .minecraft folder.

Not sure if this'll work for ya, but I found Catacombs mod. Using this is fairly simple to me, adds great ways to kill time (especially if you customize it to be epic, because, let's be honest here, if we're going to mod our servers, why not go balls to the wall?)
