How Much Lag Does BuildCraft Actually Cause?

So, from reading this post. The lag doesnt actually come from the pipes themselves but from the sheer amount of items going through them? I.E. when I spammed scatter mode on my laser gun The amount of rocks/ores/items on the floor lagged me for 5 minutes.
