Finally found it on my own - it's the spawn limit that had me. Had to move even further before I could do anything. Leaving the post in case someone else is as confused as me... but feel free to delete it if it's been answered a ton of times already :)

I'm new to minecraft, and I've tried googling for over an hour now but I honestly don't know what to keyword what's happening here. I've set up my own tekkit server (just downloaded the server from the site, removed advanced machinery and nether ore mods, downed the Xmx a little, and ran it) I'm on OS X Lion, java 1.6, 2gb RAM... I gave it 1G Xmx to play with. The server seems to have set up ok (though how do I know?) and it allows me to log in. It saves my position in the world when I log in and out, but I can't interact. I'm not getting any "can't keep up" messages from the server, in fact it's just telling me it's sending responses to my character when I try to break a block, but nothing else. What happens is, I punch a block, and the break animation appears in the client, but it's as if the server has ignored me. The block just remains there. I can't make any impact. Help?
