My friend has downloaded the executable, and I;m guiding him through what to do. Basically, when he launches the executable, he selected Tekkit, logs in and then get a update notice. The update continues but then error message appear saying "Download Failed". We tried running as admin, still doesn't help. What should he do?

So I managed to get the server up and running (Tekkit by the way), I've opped myself, but now i'd like to know how I can stop my friends from getting items from the Not Enough Items (NEI) mod. I basically want it visible to them so that they can see the recepies, but I don't want them to get the items from it directly. The only person that can do that should be the admin (in this case, myself). Thank you
