I have the same problem, I've tried turning off my anti-virus, I've re-installed both Tekkit and Minecraft, I've reset the commercial grade modem, Internet booster, and Shaw box. I've gotten hard copies of updates from friends to overcome the inability to connect yet nothing changes it. I've lost count of how many times I've re-started and re opened it under different circumstance - nothing. Unless there is something else that may be done I'm just waiting until the next update to see if catching up to MC 1.3 changes anything... I'll just go play single player and continue my three year castle project...
