how do i change the file extention?

Launcher Version: it cant be outdated , i just got minecraft. im pretty sure its the latest. Operating System: hp pavilion slimline Java Version: i dont know the exact number , but im pretty sure its the lastest i just updated it Antivirus Program: kaspersky(i think) Description of Problem: i downloaded the launcher but it would always say "windows is seaching for a problem" instead of running the launcher. so i looked at the fourms and saw that most people used the jar file and it worked. so i downloaded that , but it openes the files when i double click it, and i dont know how to run it.
