magnetizer elevator

I'm working on setting this up as my return to surface from layer 12. It's being a bit quirky and I keep moving the magnetizers. I need 2 for my setup and something thats being vague in game needs clarifying. Does this NOT work with the magnetizer sitting next to the rail? I've had it work for 2 trips now in this manner, but the only method consistently has been with the magnetizer inline with the rail itself which is semi-defeating the purpose of an elevator because you hit your head on the magentizer.
