Question regarding Install Folder....

I have a small SSD as my main OS drive. If I were to change the install folder in the launcher options to an external usb drive will technic copy the required files into the minecraft folder on my C drive when it runs or will it try to run from the external usb drive. I'm asking because I think the game will run slower from an external usb than an internal ssd. :)
