Title: buildcraft engine bug, always facing up..

Version: 3.1.2

OS: Windows 7 x64

Java Version: 1.6.0_31

Description of Problem:

Whenever i try to place an engine, (redstone engine, for example.) the blue thing faces up, making it impossible to use any engines, however when i place redstone engines next to each other, they start powering the redstone engine they are connected to..

Use a wrench to change their direction. Not a bronze wrench, you want the BC one made with 3 iron bars and a stone gear.

when i place my engine next to a pump it goes in the same position, when i use the right wrench (looked up recipe in NEI.) it still doesn't change direction, it did change direction on the engine though.

maybe it's the pump that's bugged?

It looks like that's an Industrial craft pump. You want the Build craft version.

I could be wrong as I'm looking at the picture using my phone.

That's actually a RedPower pump, but yeah, same problem.
