Error: Can't reach server

Description of Problem:

When i try to connect to my friends tekkit server i get the error message 'can't reach server'. This appears when i add a server to my multiplayer list, so therefore if i were to try and join the server with this message present, nothing would hapoen.

My friend has portforwarded properly and we've made sure that external ip is correct. His router has even be reset with no luck.

This is probably a stupid error for me to be unable to fix, but i would like some help on the matter as i'm clueless.

well what I can think of at the moment:

1)if he plugs directly into the router and you still can't connect then it's a server issue

2)make sure the server is allowed through windows firewall. I've had the damned zombie still interfering even if the service is turned off.

3)make sure he's set to a static internal IP, the forwarding won't work if his local ip changes.
