How do i repair my equipment?

Alright, so I have a ton of equipment thats broken and ruined. I throw away the stuff without bonuses and keep the stuff with. I want to know if this was wise, or if I should just toss it all. I read somewhere that you could repair tools, i forget how. Does it work the same as normal minecraft?

In the 2x2 or 3x3 crafting square, fix any item with dirt. It doesn't work with vanilla items though.

Iron ingots and redstone work as well, and they repair more than dirt.
