New Server Owner asking for some help.

Not sure if this is the right area to be posting this, but figured it looked the best. So, after a search around the forums with little to no results, I decided to ask here my simple yet nooby question.

How do I add admin/mod rights to people/myself on my server?

Just picked up a server for myself and my friends to use, and am trying to get my ducks in a row in case we run into the average player creeper who just wants to watch the world burn.

If you are not using a permision plugin just go into the console and type "/op (player)" without the quotes. For example /op Notch.

Hmm.. just tried that and I get the following message:

"I'm sorry, but you do not have permission to perform this command. Please contact the server administrators if you believe that this is in error."

Thinking I might have to contact my Server Provider over this?

Did you do it from the console?

That's what you would get if you tried to do it in game.

No, it just means you haven't yet oped your self through the console.
