Minecraft says it's out of memory

Title: Minecraft says it's out of memory

Version: 3.1.2

OS: Win 7 x64 Pro

Java Version: 1.6.0_31

Description of Problem:

Numerous issues actually. Attempting to change the texture pack causes minecraft to shut down with the message that it's out of memory, can't deselect the texture pack.

deleting the texture pack wouldn't get it back to normal - had to edit the config file and remove the texture pack from there, causing it to default back to normal.

created a new world, flew around for a while while keeping my eyes fixed on the memory use of java in the background. never went above 300 MB of ram used this time, but after about 5 minutes, crashed.

I suspect something in the background is causing memory issues, and as that's not my area of expertise, I'd appreciate any help trying to narrow down the source of the problem.

This happens with all of the mod pack options on the technic launcher. Have tried tekkit, technic, yogbox, voxelmodpack...

Can't seem to set the memory limit above a gig and a half of ram in the options menu either.

voxelmodpack actually gave me a crash message:

Minecraft has crashed!

----------------------

Minecraft has stopped running because it encountered a problem; Unexpected error

You're running it with 1.5gb of memory, that's probably why it's out of memory. I allocate (or suggest allocating) at LEAST 2~3 gb of memory when I play w/ 64x+ texture packs, as they require more memory.

If you can't, then get 64-bit java.

It looks like you are using 32-bit Java. By default only 32-bit Java is installed due to default 32-bit Internet Explorer.

Assuming that your Windows really is 64-bit, you would likely benefit from manually installing 64-bit Java. That resolved this issue for another recent poster.
