Description of Problem:

I'm running a server on Hamachi and as host everything works fine, but when my friends connect our ping goes through the roof and they cant load anything at all, they just see mobs but no blocks. It might be a Hamachi thing but it seems to be only when they are connecting to the server, otherwise our ping with Hamachi is fine.

Your friend was probably playing with BuildCraft pipes and setup a machine, and now the items are just dumping on the ground because the chunks had been unloaded when he\she logged off. If you are able to play fine but it dies out when you friend connects, you may just need to clean items from the map. Using WorldEdit you can do a /remove items -1 This will remove all the items sitting on the ground from the map. Hope this was your issue.
